Yes Grandma Wears Funky Glasses ... not to be cool or to be told they look like Elton John's but because Grandma has a very rare eye condition, called Benign Essential Blepharospasm (BEB), Hopefully this post will help raise awareness of this disorder which in turn will help in raising funds for research into the cause to help find a cure.
Currently the most common form of treatment is periodic injections of botulinum toxin.
This movement disorder of the eyelids affects an estimated 5 out of every 100000 people, mostly women, with the average age of onset being 56.
"The term blepharospasm ['blef-a-ro-spaz-m] can be applied to a forced, sustained, and involuntary closure of the eyelids. It stems from a number of causes, beginning with dry eyes, and, may progress to a state where the person is "legally blind". The blepharospasm referred to here is officially called Benign Essential Blepharospasm (BEB). "Benign" indicates the condition is not life threatening, and "essential" is a medical term meaning "of unknown cause"." www.blepharospasm.ca
Mayor David Miller of Toronto recently declared May 24th to the 30th

good morning Kathy,
I've never heard of this condition before....I'm sorry to hear that you have been afflicted with it and glad to hear that it is not life threatening. David's proclamation will certainly bring greater awareness also and hopefully, as you've said, bring more funds to help find a cure.
Jo
Hi Jo - At this point mine is very mild and appears to be easily controlled the big issue was finding out what it was ... it took quit a while to get a diagnosis, for years every one I saw said it was just dry eye syndrome but nothing they prescribed gave any real measure of relief. Now except for the pink glasses I hardly notice it.
Hey, Kathy. I left a surprise for you in my blog post this morning. Let me know when you find it. What? You thought I was going to tell you exactly where it is? Ha! This comment is a clue, though.
Ray - this is something that many people have with out realizing it ..... it often goes undiagnosed or miss diagnosed as dry eye syndrom ..... thanks for the shout out and helping to raise awarness ..... ps I found it
Hi Kathy -- I thought I remembered this post, but apparently not since I hadn't left a comment. I'm glad Russel shose to bring it to our attention today. And I hope you're still doing well, in all way.
Lottie - Very Well Thank you ..... thanks for checking it out
